Department of Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine is a medical specialty that diagnoses and treats physical conditions and illnesses in a safe and convenient manner by taking very low levels of radioisotopes releasing radiation and using them as tracers.
The Department of Nuclear Medicine performs in-vivo imaging tests, which involve the injection of radioisotopes suitable for appropriate purposes and the creation of images of their distribution using a gamma camera or a Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Topography system, and in-vitro sample tests, which include detailed analysis of the blood serum taken from the patient’s blood using radioisotopes to determine the presence of illness. The department also includes the field of radioisotope therapy aimed at treating cancer using radioisotopes.
