Department of Nephrology
The Department of Nephrology deals with diseases arising of the kidneys. The kidneys remove wastes from our body and regulate fluid and electrolyte balance as well as acid-base balance. The kidneys also function as excretory organs, which form blood cells and activate vitamin D.
Common symptoms of kidney diseases include: blood in urine, low urine output, bloating, and protein in urine (proteinuria), which may be accompanied by non-specific symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, and decreased appetite. The ageing population has led to an increase in the prevalence of hypertension and diabetes, which are leading causes of chronic renal failure. It has ultimately resulted in the gradual increase in patients with renal disease. Moreover, with the growth of the ageing patient population, more active healthcare techniques have been developed to treat elderly diseases, while there is also an increased risk of acute kidney injury.
